A prominent feature in Madison’s downtown square and beloved filming location when Y’allywood comes to town, Morgan County Courthouse is open to visitors when court is not in session.
Today, the building houses the magistrate, probate, and superior court. It has been used as background in a number of television and film projects, including Goosebumps, I’ll Fly Away, Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and American Made, starring Tom Cruise.
This impressive Neoclassical Revival style building was constructed in 1905 by J.W. Golucke and Company to replace the County’s previous two courthouses that were both destroyed by fire.
The original courthouse, built in 1809, was a small brick building in the middle of Madison’s downtown square that was destroyed in a fire not long after construction. The lot was sold as federal property and now serves as a town post office.
The second courthouse, built in 1845, was moved from its original location and was constructed across the street from the original lot, but was subsequently demolished in yet another fire. Years later, in 1905, this third and final courthouse of Morgan County was built in its current location.
